Tonco bean (Dipteryx odorata)

The bean from this tree has its origin in the forests of Brazil and British Guiana where it is called "Rumara". It is used in perfumery as a fixative. The fragrant component in the bean, called "coumarin" is also used to flavour castor-oil. The fatty substance of the beans is sold in Holland as "Tonquin Butter".
