Description

As a native Marigold of Mexico and Guatemala, T. lucida is well known by the locals as a substitute for Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), and as such is used in teas, vinegars and dishes. The Zapotecs use Tagetes as a primary herb in purification rituals. The plant is popular with the Tarahumara Indians of Chihuahua and is used by the modern Huichol Indians in their religious Peyote rituals. Smoked, the plant is said to enhance closed-eye visions. The botanical genus name Tagetes is in reference to a Roman deity, Tages which, probably, was originally an Etruscan god of prophecy. The species name lucidus means "bright", or "light". In Mexico, it is traditionally used as a tea but also as a flavoring for soups, sauces, chicken dishes, etc. and harsh Turkish tobaccos. A strong Tagetes Lucida tea is said to produce similar but milder effects than those of Peyote and has been used since pre-Hispanic times with many of its properties ascribed to this plant, known as Yauhtli in the Nahuatl language. The leaves were an important flavouring of "Chocolatl", the foaming Cocoa-based drink of the Aztec.

Scent

Bruised leaves have and intoxicating, sweet Licorice, and Tarragon-like smell with overtones of Anise, with a hint of floral. Tagetes lucida is amongst the most sweetly-scented of all flowers.

Aromatic Properties

Tagetes lucida offers a new dimension of relaxation to aromatherapy. The aroma clears thinking, relieves tension, aids emotional control. The dried plant can also be burnt as an incense and used to repel insects.

Tagetes species contain a number of bioactive compounds; notably flavonoids. Flavonoids constitute a large group of natural compounds, with an array of pharmacological activities. Notably, we find patuletin. We also find quercetagetin, and a related compound, quercetagritin. In addition to the abovementioned compounds, the genus Tagetes is rich in thiophenes, carotenoids and xanthophylls, as well as smaller levels of terpenes, ketones and other types of active chemicals. T. Lucida contains small amounts of methyl eugenol and anethole.

Historical

Bernal Diaz, one of the Conquistadors sent by Spain to explore middle America, recorded in his diary the Conquistadors astonishment at the gardens of the Aztec Emperor Montezuma, "with their many varieties of flowers and sweet-scented trees... his gardens were a wonderful sight." But plants were not merely used for decorative purposes as Diaz later notes; Montezuma kept a place within the palace gardens for "the medicinal and useful herbs". The Aztecs had developed a highly sophisticated system of medicine, in which these medicinal and useful herbs played a vital part. We know this because, in the wake of the Conquistadors, scholars travelled to the Americas to record the knowledge of the indigenous people in the form of codices and other documents. We can also see traces of traditional uses of herbs in the contemporary use of medicinal plants by Mexican communities.
In Sahagún’s description of the use of Tagetes Lucida: "it is an ejector of humors, it is a medicine... one who has chills drinks an infusion of it. It is rubbed in the hands with water. And with it there is incensing, and there is washing." It is worth mentioning that powdered Tagetes Lucida was also administered to certain sacrificial victims, with the dual intention of inducing both anaesthetic and hallucinogenic effects.
When Tagetes Lucida was administered to sacrificial victims, it was as a powder of dried herb, which would be blown into the face of the intended victim. It is not especially likely that this is an effective way of administering the drug. There are manyfold properties to Tagetes Lucida and Erecta, that, although commonplace to us, they actually held a central place in the Aztec world, being both sacred herbs of Tlaloc, and enormously important medicines.
Secretions from the roots of growing plants have an insecticidal effect on the soil and the growing plant also has a repellent effect on various insect pests. A yellow dye can be obtained from the flowers, which was also known in Cherokee herbal knowledge as well as the medicinal qualities.
It is used in the kitchen as a condiment and tea. Leaves are dried and ground into a powder then used as a Tarragon substitute for flavouring soups, sauces etc. They have an Anise-like flavour. The petals are used as a condiment.

Plant Description

Tagetes Lucida or Mexican tarragon is an attractive landscape ornamental, a beautiful, bright green perennial herb. Mexican tarragon is originally from Guatemala and the Mexican state of Oaxaca. It is a half-hardy semi-woody sub-shrub that grows 50-100cm tall. The plant is bushy with many smooth, upright, unbranched stems. The leaves are linear to oblong, about 7cm long, and shiny medium green, not blue-green as in real French Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus). In late summer Mexican tarragon bears clusters of small yellow flower heads on the ends of the stems. The flower heads are about a half inch across and have 3-5 golden-yellow ray florets. They continue to bloom late into autumn.

Description

The Passion Flower name derived from the supposed resemblance of the finely-cut corona in the centre of the blossoms to the "Crown of Thorns" and of the other parts of the flower to the instruments of the "Passion of Our Lord".

Plant Description

Passiflora incarnata has a perennial root, and the herbaceous shoots bear three-lobed, finely serrated leaves and flesh-coloured or yellowish, sweet-scented flowers, tinged with purple. The ripe, orange-coloured, ovoid, many-seeded berry is about the size of a small apple; when dried, it is shrivelled and greenish-yellow. The yellow pulp is sweet and edible.

Description

Argemone mexicana is commonly known as Mexican Prickly Poppy or Goatweed. The leaves are variously lobed and its thorns are white and prominent with large yellow flowers. The tough stem has thorns and yellow sap. It is often found in pastures and grows in Central America, Southern USA and India. It is used in ayurvedic medicine. Dried and powdered plant material is recommended as green manure as it contain sufficient amount of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium. The Prickly Poppy is native to the New World, whereas the Opium Poppy was an Old World plant.

Description

In the Middle Ages and later, Ruta was, in many parts of Europe, considered to be a powerful defense against witches, and was used in many spells. Ruta was once a very popular remedy, known as the "Eye herb". Many artists, among them Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo spoke in praise of Ruta`s metaphysical powers. It has been used for a variety of illnesses. It helps soften respiratory troubles like coughs and sore throats in a natural way. It also helps to maintain good comfort before and during menstrual cycle. Furthermore it contributes to the microbial balance in the body organs and tissues.(5)

Ruta has a pungent, skunk-like odor.

The chemical composition is large and varied. Over 110 chemicals have been found in all parts of the plant, including fats, oils, flavanoids, alkaloids, essential oils and a host of others. The volatile oil is contained in glands distributed over the whole plant and contains caprinic, plagonic, caprylic and oenanthylic acids have been found. Rue contains max. 1% of an essential oil, whose main components are 2-hendecanone (2-undecanone, methylnonylketone, up to 60%) and 2-nonanone (methylheptylketone) plus several more ketones and corresponding secondary alcohols. Methyl anthranilate and anethole glycol are also reported; terpenoids are represented mainly by limonene, α-pinene, cuminaldehyd and l,8-cineol. Rue also contains flavonoids (including rutin), furanocoumarins (including bergapten), about 1.4% furoquinoline alkaloids (including fagarine, skimmianine, arborinine, and others).

Historical

Rue has been used as a medicinal and "antimagic" herb for centuries. It was considered a reliable defense against witches. Gunflints boiled in a mixture of rue and vervain were said improve the shooter's aim. Artists, including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, improved their creativity and eyesight by ingesting rue. Rue is a symbol of regret, sorrow and repentance, and Catholics used sprigs of it to sprinkle holy water on worshippers. The rue leaf was the model for the suit of clubs in playing cards. The name Ruta is from the Greek “Reuo”, meaning “to set free”. (1)(2)

Health Warnings

Some people are allergic to rue and get a skin rash from handling the plant. Especially on hot days, just brushing against rue can cause water blisters and blotchy skin, much like poison ivy. For some people, ingestion causes increased photosensitivity and can lead to severe sunburn. Ingesting large amounts of rue can cause violent stomach pain, vomiting, and convulsions. Pregnant women should never ingest rue. (1)

Plant Description

Rue is an aromatic plant native to southern Europe and northern Africa. It is commonly cultivated in Europe and the U.S., sometimes escaping to grow wild locally. It is a small evergreen subshrub or semiwoody perennial 2-3 ft (60-90 cm) tall and almost as wide. The stems become woody near the base, but remain herbaceous nearer the tips. The 3-5 in (7.6-12.7 cm) long leaves are dissected pinnately into oblong or spoon shaped segments. They are somewhat fleshy and usually covered with a powdery bloom. The sea green foliage has a strong, pungent, rather unpleasant scent when bruised. The paniculate clusters of small yellow flowers appear in midsummer, held well above the foliage and often covering most of the plant. Each flower is about 0.5 in (1.3 cm) across with four concave notched petals. The fruit is a roundish capsule, warted, and 4-lobed, each lobe opening into 2 valves. (3)(4)

Description

Hypericum perforatum is an aromatic, perennial plant with bright yellow flowers that is native to many parts of Europe. Its common name derives from the fact that it blossoms and is traditionally harvested around the 24th of June which is St. John’s day. (3) Traditionally it was believed to have magic powers and to ward off evil spirits and was used as a ceremonial plant for protection at the midsummer festivals. (2) In fact its Latin name is derived from the Greek words hyper (above) and eikon (picture) referring to its traditional use of being hung over a picture in the house on St. John’s day for this very purpose. (3) In medieval times people believed that if you slept with a sprig of St. John's wort under your pillow on St. John's Eve (the night before St. John's Tide), "The Saint would appear in a dream, give his blessing, and prevent one from dying during the following year". (7)

Contents

St. John’s wort contains a large number of active compounds, the best studied of which are Hypericin, pseudohypericin and Hyperforin. It also contains essential oils, tannins and flavonoids (3)

Historical

St. John’s wort has a long history of use in many cultures dating back to pre-Christian times. Romans burned the herb at bonfires as part of the Mid-summers day celebrations while in England, people used St. John’s wort to protect against witchcraft, evil spirits, enchantments and even storms and thunder by draping the plant over doorways, windows and even on their bodies. Priests were said to exorcise demons using the herb and it was also thought to drive away the evil eye. On the Isle of Man, one superstition claimed that anyone who stood on the plant after sunset would be taken away by a fairy horse to ride through the night until sunrise. (7)

St. John’s wort also has a history of use in folk medicine in several different cultures dating back to ancient Greece. Native Americans also used the herb internally to help relieve stomach ailments and to fight tuberculosis. (3)(7)

The popularity and scientific interest in St. John’s wort has increased greatly in recent years and it is currently being prescribed in Germany in some cases to treat mild depression especially in children, adolescents and where costs are a concern. (6) Several studies have shown St. John’s wort to be more effective than placebo in treating mild to moderate depression while having fewer side effects than conventional antidepressants. (5) Some research has also suggested that St. John’s wort helps to support digestion, improve the appearance of the skin, support the excretory functions of the kidneys and improve overall health. Health Warnings

St. John’s wort has been noted to increase sensitivity to light. Other side effects can include anxiety, dry mouth, dizziness, gastrointestinal symptoms, fatigue, headache, or sexual dysfunction. (1)

Plant Description

H. Perforatum is a long living perennial with flowers that grows 300-1200 mm tall. Its leaves are opposite, ovate to linear and 15-30 mm long. The leaves have translucent dots which become obvious when held against the light and there are five petals to each flower which are bright yellow in color with black dots. It is a fast growing and invasive plant and listed as a noxious weed in more than twenty countries. It is native to temperate zones of Europe and western Asia but has spread to many other areas. Description

Lagochilus inebrians has long been used for its intoxicating properties by Tajik, Tatar, Turkoman and Uzbek tribesman and Shamans. A crystalline compound isolated from the plant and named lagochiline has proved to be aditerpene. Maximum quantities of lagochilinus accumulate in plants during flowering and fruit production stages (May-July). Whether or not it produces the psychoactive effects of the whole plant is unknown.
