Mucuna (Mucuna pruriens)

Mucuna pruriens is a climbing plant originating from tropical America. The pods are covered with stinging hairs that cause irritation. The seeds of Mucuna pruriens are also known as "Velvet beans". In Central America, Velvet beans have been roasted and ground to make a coffee substitute for decades: "Nescafé" it is called in these regions as well as in Brazil. It is still grown as a food crop by the Ketchi indigenous people in Guatemala where the bean is cooked as a vegetable. In Brazil the seeds have also been used as a medicine. It also has a long history of use in Indian Ayurveda. The seeds are known to enhance the mental function, support normal control of physical movements, and strengthen the immune system. They also enhance the libido and support both the male and female sexual function. For women they also normalise the menstrual blood flow and support the health of the reproductive organs. The seeds of Mucuna pruriens are high in protein, carbohydrates and minerals. They are also rich in alkaloids and are an important natural source of L-dopa.

Tolubalsam (Myrospermum toluiferum)

This is a large tree native to the forests of South America, and especially to Peru. The resin has many medicinal properties, and has an absolutely beautiful fragrance and a pleasant, sweet, aromatic, resinous taste -becoming soft again when chewed- with an odour resembling Vanilla or Benzoin. It is especially fragrant when the balsam is finely powdered and burned on charcoal in very small amounts.

The bean from this tree has its origin in the forests of Brazil and British Guiana where it is called "Rumara". It is used in perfumery as a fixative. The fragrant component in the bean, called "coumarin" is also used to flavour castor-oil. The fatty substance of the beans is sold in Holland as "Tonquin Butter".

Yopo (Anadenanthera colubrina)

Anadenanthera, a rare species that has been held as entheogenic for many centuries. Archaeological remains of Anadenanthera colubrina have been found all throughout South America and the West Indies.
The two species of trees in the Anadenanthera genus (A. peregrina and A. colubrina) both have hallucinogenic properties and have been widely used to make powerful psychoactive snuffs in American Indian cultures.
Anadenanthera is one of the four most widely used types of psychoactive substance in traditional South American Indian cultures, along with Tobacco, Ayahuasca and Virola species. The antiquity of Anadenanthera use has been confirmed by important archaeological discoveries.
