A shaman travels between the two worlds, the world of the living and the mystical world of spirits and ghosts. In a state of trance the two worlds might melt together to form one. Totem items are used as the linking elements between the two worlds. They serve as the telephone line to the astral world. Shamans have even worn totem items as part of their clothing. Some Indian tribes believe all human beings have a totem, usually an animal or other naturalistic figure, which acts as a spiritual guide, a kind of a father figure determining a persons character or protecting the person.

In some cultures one of the shaman's duties is to bring over the souls of dead people to their final destination. In North-European shamanism the folks collected the skulls of the killed enemies in war times and gave them to the shaman. The shaman placed these skulls around his home. Description

Salacca zalacca is a plant in the palm tree family that is native to Indonesia and Malaysia. The tree has been cultivated in South East Asia for its rare and delicious fruit which is commonly referred to as Salak or Snakefruit due to its reddish-brown and scaly skin. The fruit grow in clusters at the base of the tree and are roughly the size of figs with distinct pointed ends.

Snakefruit is usually consumed fresh when ripe though the unripe fruit is sometimes consumed in "rujak" which is a spicy salad that is made with unripe fruit. In Indonesia the fruit is also candied and pickled. The taste of Snakefruit depends on the cultivar but generally has a very unique and sweet taste which is somewhat comparable to a combination of apple, pineapple and banana when ripe. When unripe, the fruit has a sour taste. The consistency of the fruit can also vary widely but in general is unusually firm and crisp for a tropical fruit.(2)

Historical

Salacca zalacca has been cultivated for its fruit in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia and has also been introduced to the Phillipines, New Guinea and Queensland. There are more than 30 different cultivars of the species. Out of these, the two of the most popular cultivars are the Salak pandoh which is grown in the Indonesian province of Yogyakarta and the Salak Bali which is cultivated on the Island of Bali.(1) The Salak Bali is more popular with non-natives and is also popular among monkeys who steal the fruit from tourists and children.
Apart from being a delicious and exotic snack, Snakefruit may also provide some health benefits. A recent study on the bioactivity of Snakefruit found that "In conclusion, Snake fruit and Mangosteen contain high quantity of bioactive compounds, therefore positively affect plasma lipid profile and antioxidant activity in rats fed cholesterol-containing diets."(3)

Plant Description

Salacca zalacca is a very spiny, creeping, short-stemmed palm that thrives best under humid lowland tropical conditions. The roots of the tree do not extend to great depths. The leaves are 3-7m long and pinnate and each leaf has a 2m long petiole with spines up to 15cm long and numerous leaflets. The leaflets and petioles are armed with long grey to blackish spines. The flowers are in pairs and are yellow-green on the outside and dark red on the inside. The fruit are roughly the size of figs and weigh an average of roughly 90g, with each fruit containing 3 large seeds. Fruits are technically produced all year round, but reports indicate that May is usually the peak period for harvesting fruit followed by a smaller harvesting peak around December. The tree can produce fruit for 50 years or more.(2)

Description

Ganesha, also spelled Ganesa or Ganesh and also known as Ganapati, Vinayaka, and Pillaiyar, is one of the best-known and most worshipped deities in the Hindu pantheon. His image is found throughout India. Hindu sects worship him regardless of other affiliations. Devotion to Ganesha is widely diffused and extends to Jains, Buddhists, and beyond India. Although he is known by many other attributes, Ganesha's elephant head makes him easy to identify. Ganesha is widely revered as the "Remover of Obstacles" and more generally as "Lord of Beginnings" and "Lord of Obstacles" (Vighnesha, Vighneshvara), patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. He is honoured at the start of rituals and ceremonies and invoked as "Patron of Letters" during writing sessions. Several texts relate mythological anecdotes associated with his birth and exploits and explain his distinct iconography. Ganesha emerged as a distinct deity in clearly recognizable form in the 4th and 5th centuries CE, during the Gupta Period, although he inherited traits from Vedic and pre-Vedic precursors.
